Locke
Dumbledore said that when we fear things like the darkness and death it's the unknown we fear. Voldemort who secretly fears both disagrees.

I was wondering if anyone else thought about his magical transformations to make up for his fear of these two things. For instance, to hide from death he created the horcruxes.

My thoughts were to escape the dark he transformed his eyes so he would have cat like pupils. Cats can see in the dark much better than humans.

Does anyone else think this is the reason Jo did this? I don't know how much relavence this holds but I thought it was interesting.

I think the reason his eyes are "cat-like" is to show that he simply is less human, and appears much like a snake, who also have the slitted pupils.

in fact, i don't remember his eyes being described as cat-like but rather as snake-like... filch however, has lamplike eyes similar to mrs. norris's... i could be wrong though...

nah his nose is snakelike but his eyes are red and like a cats.

It is very possible Locke. In PS Voldy's eyes are described as "glaring red eyes" and in GoF "geaming red eyes" + "his red eyes, whose pupils were slits, like a cat's, gleamed still more brightly in the darkness" GoF UK edition pg559. The last quote specifically seems perfect for your cause! Especially the darkness reference. Very good.

That is a really intersting idea. It sounds exactly like something Voldy would not only want to do but have the ability to do.

I agree.  I actually wouldn't be surprised if he tried some spell to enhance his vision.

I love subtle things like that which JK do. thumbup.gif Although in GoF the film, Voldy (or should I say Ralph Fiennes) has blue eyes. Pah.

Dumbledore also said that Voldemort is afraid of a corpse (somewhere in HBP, can't find the quote :headdesk: . It was the same time he said that LV is afraid of the dark, if that helps anyone.), yet he has an army of corpses; namely, the Inferi. The fact that he controls them may make him feel powerful and not afraid, though it's strange that he has an army of something he fears...

Well he uses infiri because he reasons that if they are scary to *him*, they'd probably be scary to everyone else too.

However, as DD said, there is nothing to fear in a corpse--it's just the unknown that frightens most.  So if you keep a level head, you won't be scared of infiri and LV's plan backfires.

I just don't think LV can relate to or understand other people's views b/c he's never had friends and is so self absorbed.  He only knows what *he* fears, so he tries to project his fears on everyone else.

Also, on the topic of LV's eyes, maybe he did it not only to see good in the dary, but b/c it makes him look scary, and he's all about putting up a big, bad front to make it easier to gain fear, respect, and power.

I don't think that's the only reason. You conquer your fear by facing it--in a sense, though we haven't seen it or heard about it, LV is facing his fear. He still doesn't like the outcome, but he knows that the dead can't hurt you; it's the living you have to worry about. That doesn't mean he wants to become one, though.

Well Voldemort fears the unknown.  I think that is what DD said.  Voldemort seems to be a person who doesn't admit his fears, but seems to assume that everyone else has his same fears.  So he makes things or gets people that will scare the community with things Voldemort himself is afraid of.  If that makes sense.

Yeap. Voldemort just wants to be as close to Salazar Slytherin as he can get, and by looking almost like a snake he can do that.

I think that Voldys whole appearence changed because he isn't human anymore, but i wouldnt be surprised at all if he wanted to improve his vision. the better he can see the less anyone can keep from him.
Dumbledore is the one who says that there is nothing to fear in the dead, it is the living we have to worry about ; they can do damage! But Voldy has always feared death above everything else; he devoted his life to making himself immortal after all. Death is the most threatening and unnerving thing to him, and im sure he hopes he will disadvantage his enemy by having an army of dead bodys attack them. Voldy sees only his own fears and uses them against other people.
