Hi there  just wandering about what Hermione smelled from the Amortentia (the love potion Slughorn made for the first lesson)...she says she smells freshly mown grass (curious) and new parchment (obvious) but she doesn't want to say what else she can smell...
My guess is something related to Ron...does his maroon jumper have a particular smell?
enjoy posting!

Yeah. She was probably embarassed to say it, considering he was sitting right there. Haha, picture how awkard that would be:
Hermionie: "I smell freshly mown grass, new parchment, and Ron's musk."

I agree. Knowing that each person smelled something attractive to them, she managed to keep from blurting it out! Oh, how I hope they have their own gaggle of red-headed know-it-alls!!

I thought the freshly mown grass was Ron. It just makes sense to me... Ron, Quidditch, grass. And the parchment is like appealing to the intelligent side of her, maybe the teacher in her. I always thought she stopped talking because she smelled something Ron always smelled like.

Maybe the perfume Ron gave her for christmas in OOTP.

Oh good one! That would definitely be a smell that would relate to Ron and no one else. I did wonder about that bit in Book 5 when Ron gives HErmione perfume. It seemed so strange to put that in and yet not to really mention it again. It was just a detail that didn't seem to add anything to the story at that time. But it makes sense now after reading Book 6.
In my mind when I read Hermione say cut grass.....I immediately had an image of her dad mowing the lawn. It seems like something a dentist would like to do when not working-take care of the yard. I can see the Granger family spending their Saturdays outside mowing and gardening together.

I was thinking of the perfume...I'm curious to what it is, though. Something related to ron...I've got no idea!

I thought it was Ron's deodrant or aftershave or whatever. It could even be his...erm....natural scent (euuurrrgghhhh). Never mind.

I've always thought it was probably the unusal perfume Ron gave Hermione for Christmas, fifth year. And I agree with the earlier poster also who said the "smell of fresh cut grass" was a hint of Ron also because of Quidditch.
If the Chudley Cannons had a smell, it would have been that.

I forgot about the perfume...thanks !
but it might also be something related to Viktor Krum (she kissed him, right?and she doesn't want to share her personal love story) or to Harry and she doesn't want to say anything about because she thinks that people will think she's in love with him ... altough I think he's just a friend for her

Wait a minute. The amortentia was in the first potions lesson wasn't it? Thats september. Hermione never got the perfume till December so why would she smell it in September. Unless she'd smelt it before, in which case, why did she blush?

Maybe the cut grass was the Burrow. And maybe the secret one is his clothing. (I can imagine Hermione, hugging Ron and memorizing his... scent.)
P.S In Amorentia, Amor is Spanish for love. Obvious I know.

Ron smell! Oh that would be horrid if it was his B.O. Just messing around.
It might be a random smell that his clothes carry. But the perfume sounds like the answer. Good job!
One thing though, Hermione shut up because she knew exactly what it was (a.k.a. ron smell). How long has she been keeping that a secret?

I agree with the perfume theory, but also think there is substanial evidence for something that reminds her of Ron such as deoderant, or I was thinking the smell of Butterbeer, because I always associate Ron with that because of the Three Broomsticks (but that's probably just me...)
The parchment is of course appealing to her intellectual side, but, think about all the hours she spends with Ron, fixing his homework and working in the library...
The fresh grass to me is a symbol of homelife, of calming and relaxing nature. Perhaphs it is Hermione's longing for peace and family. For while it seems she is her parents pride and joy, she doesn't seem very attatched to them at all. The grass smell is probably a symbol of belonging and love for her.

Everyone has there own particular smell though dont they. So i imagine it would be something to do with rons odour.

Honeysuckle. It grows at The Burrow. And Leaky Loungers who live in the city are missing something wonderful.

When she said fresh grass, I thought about 2 things...the burrow (obviously) and the grounds at Hogwarts. The grounds at Hogwarts are always private times that Ron, Hermione and Harry get to share.
I thought the parchment was from helping Ron with homework, and all the time they've spent in the Library.
When she stopped speaking and blushed, that's when I thought her thoughts went to Viktor. It was like the things she wants merged with the things she's had. Though she did kiss Viktor, the first two scents reminded her of Ron...she got to thinking of Ron, thinking of what kissing Ron would be like...then remembered kissing (in general). Her only experience with that was with Krum.

Fairly early on in Goblet of Fire (around Chap 4 or 5, I have no idea what page) when the Weasleys, including Bill and Charlie, and Harry and Hermione are eating dinner in the garden at The Burrow, Jo describes sweet summer evening air permeated with the smell of freshly mown grass and honeysuckle. She uses the exact same construction in HPB when Hermione enters Slughorn’s classroom. Never an anvil around when you need one.

I was puzzled about why Hermione smelled grass, so I've been looking for references to grass and found that one in GoF. It was while Harry and Hermione were dining outdoors with the Weasleys at the Burrow the evening before they left for the Quidditch World Cup.
So the grass smell might have been the Burrow. JKR often gives clues about things like this. So I agree with those who think the secret smell was the perfume Ron gave Hermione.

I don't know about the perfume, she didn't appear to like it that much ('Interresting'... is this good or bad?) and we never hear that she wears it. Ginny has a flowery smell and that's what Harry smells in the amortentia although he doesn't realise it's her at the time. Perhaps Hermione smells Ron's deodorant or the smell in his room (every room has a smell lol) and the reason she stops is because she, unlike Harry, realises what she's smelling? The freshly mown grass, i believe, is just the burrow itself. She seems to prefer it to home, the entire family not just Ron. After thinking it out, all the clues to the 3rd smell point to Ron, but as i actually read it i thought 'Viktor Krum'. But it was more just a fling wasn't it?

I think it's probably Ron. I wonder... what does Ron smell like?
Fresh cut grass, parchment... that has "Hermione" written all over it for me! And I agree, I can just imagine Mr. Granger-the-dentist mowing the lawn on a nice Sunday afternoon.

Hmm, a Ron smell...regurgitated slugs??? Nah, probably would have been an equally-disgusting (though not to hermione) rats-and-snails-and-puppy-dogs'-tails boy smell!

The perfume just didn't seem important enough to really remind her of Ron. IMO. I think it's his bedroom smell but obviously i don't have any evidence!

I don't think it would be the perfume because she could have just said perfume without being embarassed. I'm confident that whatever it was it reminded her of Ron (maybe his breath
, just kidding).

I think it's Ron, like Harry smelled Ginny, Ginny smells of flowers according to him. So my first thought when reading was that she smelled something Ron smells like....

Yes, I am sure it is the parfume. It was mentioned in book 5 with no story coming out of it. I am sure we will learn what Hermione smelled in book 7. It would be lovely to know what Ron smelled too.

Maybe Ron smells like liquorice or something, seeing as how he's always eating sweets.
Or maybe he smells like pork chops, 'cause he's always eating loads...

I'm fairly certain, 99% certain that the smell reminded her directly of Ron, because ever since I read the first book, I've been waiting for those two to get together, to the point I get aggravated that they are both so stubborn in it all.
I did relate the grass to Ron, because of the wonderful scent described in GoF and also the Quidditch Pitch. The Parchment, I think it's her love for books, and the way she's trying to impart that to both Ron and Harry.
As for the third scent, I don't think it's the perfume, just because I don't think Hermione would want to associate that scent with Ron. I would think that maybe it's Ron's own Cologne or sweets, since Ron has such a strong sweettooth. I'm not sure yet, and I really hope we find out later what it was, and that it is said to Ron and acts like a beater bat to his head that "Hey! She likes you!"

The Grass I think would remind Hermione of the Barrow, the Parchment would be the smell of books and the Other could be the perfume Ron gave her, she did mention that it was unusual. So maybe it has a distinct smell which she associates with Ron
