Did anyone else notice that house elves seem to be able to apparate on Hogwarts grounds? In many places throughout Book 6 Dobby and Kreacher apparate from one place to another within the school. Ron even says at one point, "I wish I could apparate like a house elf." Do house elves have some powers that wizards don't?

Absolutely!
I'm at work

so I don't have the books in front of me but I believe that when in the Ministry of Magic during OotP, Harry was told that Elves have VERY strong powers. This makes it even more interesting that they are esssentially slaves. It's a strong sociological statement - people repressing/giving limited resources to those who otherwise could easily overpower them. It's a sad thing to fear instead of giving everyone equal freedom and living in harmony.
Or maybe I'm over examining it and the truth is Elves are allowed to do this because no one fears them leaving if not commanded to do so.

This thread seems to be better suited to Magical Theory. Please make sure that the discussion is centered on what the difference may be between house elf and wizard powers.

My understanding is that they have very specific but very limited powers, which they can only use in particular ways. As I read it, their mode of transportation is different from Apparition as wizards and witches use it.

I am sure that elf apparation is vital in 7. It would be highly efficient.
Kreacher is Harry's slave, Dobby is as close as and all he has to do is call either of them and they'll turn up by his side and apparate him to the safety of Hogwarts where he is fleeing or just checking on things.
I've had this thought for a while but forgot to post it.

House Elves magic seems to me to be much more powerful then wizard magic (with the exceptions of DD and LV) so it could be that they are above the limitaions placed on the castle.
