Harry Potter is my favorite series and Peter Pan is my favorite book. I'm in a very acedemic mood and was curious to know what connections the two have.

Hmm ponder.gif I haven't actually read JM Barries peter pan in over a decade so I'm kind of hazy(a lot of my thoughts will probably stem from the Disney film) but i can off-hand at least, see some general interlinks such as:

  • Each has a strong and clearly defined villain: Captain Hook/Lord Voldemort
  • Each Villain has a band of followers: Hook's Pirates/Death Eaters
  • Each Villain has a subordinate which acts in a servant capacity: Mr. Smee/Wormtail
  • Each Villain has abandoned all other activities in pursuit of a personal vendetta: Hook.vs.pan/Voldemort.vs.Harry
  • Each Villain bates the story's hero with a rescue situation: Hook uses Tigerlily/ LV uses Sirius

Looking at these points I see the parallels as being between the "villains" as opposed to the title characters. I see Harry as being very seperate from the character of Peter. Harry unlike Peter does not fear growing up, in fact harry's maturation process is accelerated by the circumstances he has experienced. I do see however see a relation between Sirius and Peter Pan:

  • The unwillingness to grow old
  • Being leader of a group: The Lost boys/The Marauders
  • The reckless pursuit of adventure in spite of danger
  • A certain vanity or narcissism(remember Peter with the mermaids? and we know Sirius was very arrogant in his youth)
  • The view of battle/danger as a game or sport(remember Sirius fighting Bella, even in his last moments it was sport to him )

And perhaps there is even a small parallel between Wendy and Hermione. Wendy "mothers" her younger brothers and the lost boys and to a certain extent this is Hermione's role within the trio, as the rational, logical, practical one.

I would have to mostly agree with Azkaban's_Angel about Peter and Harry not being much alike in terms of personality, but I do think there's something to be said about their role as heroes. Both Peter and Harry are viewed as conquerers of the main villian (although Peter's first act of heroism was more intentional), and they both instinctively rush to the aid of those in danger.

However, the way that they embrace these roles is very different. Peter is borderline arrogant about his defeat of Captain Hook (considering he seems to tell his story over and over again to the mermaids, and drinks in the moments in which others tell his story), whereas Harry is as humble as can be about his defeat of LV (which is rather fitting, as he can't even remember it!)

P.S. my apologies if these character traits of Peter were only true in the movie. If I have ever actually read the book, it was far too long ago to remember smile.gif .
